bobwhite is not your typical "new" artist. He is not youthfully hip – no tattoos or facial piercings. He is 50 years old!
What he does offer is a timeless, seasoned view of life, expressed poignantly in his lyrics and melodies. Although he wears his influences on his sleeve (classic pop of the 60’s and 70’s), his voice is his own, a map of every mile he's traveled.
Grew up in NYC, "studying" at the prestigious High School of Music and Art. In the mid to late 70's, became a fixture on the New York club scene with the vaguely legendary Barlow Sample Band Baby! ‘Barlow’ were regular performers at CBGB’s and My Father's Place, earning rave print reviews and being hailed as, "the next Steely Dan meets AWB." Disco/punk explosion hits NYC. Barlow disappears.
1980. Moved to LA, reinvented himself as ‘Cliff’. Co-founded IC3, one of LA's pioneering DIY bands. IC3 was the most influential band you've never heard of. From their distinctive bar code logo, their "peace and love through technology" motto to their insistence on remaining independent, IC3 blazed the trail for what came to be known as ‘Indie’.
Self-released EP, I4C (I foresee) in ’83. With no label support, no financing, no actual touring band, IC3, championed by Richard Blade, received copious air and video play on Los Angeles' influential KROQ and Video One. Caught the attention of the music establishment - who didn’t know what to do with an outfit that was doing it all on their own. Called it a day it ‘86. Cliff disappeared.
Holding tightly to his day job with an iconic music retailer, opened record stores across the globe. Lived in Israel just long enough to sing on four number one singles and two platinum CDs with pop icon David Broza.
Fast forward. 2003. London, England. Chance visit to the high temple of Abbey Road. Inspiration! Retired rocker reincarnated as singer/songwriter bobwhite. 2004. Northern California. bobwhite - the White Album is written and recorded. The muse is back.
Suddenly, wife is diagnosed with leukemia. Seventeen months later...she was gone. Two weeks after that, iconic music retailer and lifelong career were gone too.
2007. Out of the ashes, bobwhite emerges, a singer/songwriter with a perspective all his own. bobwhite speaks to life, and death, hope and despair, all with his sneaky sense of humor and his gift for melody fully intact.
Bookings are rolling in. Crowds love him. Song intros getting longer and funnier. Fans buying CDs. MySpace presence exploding.
Thus goes the story of bobwhite. A life’s tale unfurled with lyrics, insight and humor, sung over catchy and memorable pop melodies. An engaging performer, a true raconteur, a fresh voice in a sea of American Idols.
Ladies and gentlemen please welcome bobwhite: 50 year-old rookie.
